Karen McDowell - Flugel Horn

Karen started her playing with the Spennymoor Junior band at the age of 8, on tenor horn under the tutilege of George Nicklin.
In 1986 she moved to Ferryhill band to play the flugel horn.
In 2003 she moved to Gateshead Brass, which unfortunately folded in 2005. She joined Cockerton in 2005 to help old friends out at a contest, and hasn’t managed to escape yet!!

Linda Catherall - First Horn

Linda started playing Baritone aged 11 at Monkwearmouth Grammar School with tuition from Ernie Camsey. After joining Sunderland Transport Band, with encouragement from Joe Lumsdon, she moved over to Solo Horn. This was followed by a short spell at Ryhope, then many happy years at Silksworth, which included winning the London finals in 1982 and the National Coalboard finals in 1983.

After a short break for family commitments Linda returned to banding to help out Durham Constabulary and Silksworth before settling at Cockerton in 1990. Music is very much a family affair for the Catheralls – Linda is married to Graham, a previous conductor of Cockerton, and sister-in-law of Alan, one of the country’s top brass band arrangers. Linda’s daughter Emma also helps out on 2nd Horn.
